Nels W. Rasmussen, D.C. is a native Washingtonian. “Velkommen til Poulsbo,” defines his roots on the fjord of the northwest. Dr. Nels is a third generation chiropractor who often introduces himself to those attending one of his health workshops by saying, “I’ve been a chiropractor since I was 10 years old, but it took me thirteen more years to earn my degree.” He is a 1979 graduate of Western States Chiropractic College in Portland, Oregon. He practiced for a short time with his parents in Poulsbo, for 10 years in Bellingham, two years in Sedro-Woolley/Mt. Vernon, and since 1992 in his beloved Darrington, Washington. Half of his practice time is devoted to people and the other half is devoted to the animals. Animal adjusting has been part of his practice since the beginning. His wife had an English Pointer kennel during their college years, “During walks in the park some of the dogs would get to playing chicken. Sometimes they’d both veer the same direction at the last second and hit hard. After the first time I fixed one up from their collision, they got so they would limp over to me and lay right down at my feet for an adjustment.” Horses were added to his practice in 1985 when, “A lady called me up and asked if I could adjust horses. I said, Lets find out!” A week later a quarter horse stable called him, and the phone hasn’t quit ringing since. Over the years an occasional newspaper article and a television news segment have also provided boosts, but, “ 99.9% of my practice has come by word of mouth.” He stops by family farms or homes to see as few as one animal, or sometimes the animal and the owner, and he also visits larger stables where he might see up to 30 horses and several ranch hands. How do his human patients feel about him also seeing animals? “I think it makes them feel special to have a chiropractor who is ‘ambidoctorous.’ As for me, I learn things from people that help me with the animals, and things from the animals that help me to be more effective with people.” Square dancing became a part of the Rasmussen family life in 1993. In 1999 the local club, Scramblin’ Squares, hosted a “Goofer’s Night” and Dr. Nels gave square dance calling a try. Now part of his continuing education budget goes to attending Callers College or other workshops a couple of times a year. In 2001 the Scramblin’ Squares made him the club caller. “My life is about helping people to get MORE out of life. Square dance calling is a natural extension of that. I get to help people exercise, socialize, and have a good time!” |
